Sarah’s Wood: A Legacy of Hope for the MSA Trust
Many residents may know of Sarah’s Wood on the Thoresby Estate, but they may not be aware of its deep local roots. Sarah Matheson, who grew up at the Thoresby Estate, founded the Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) Trust following her diagnosis with this devastating, rare, and life-limiting neurological condition.
Because MSA is so rare, raising awareness is vital. Established in 2017 to mark the Trust’s 20th anniversary, the wood is a living tribute to Sarah’s vision. It offers a peaceful space for reflection, featuring the ‘Path to a Cure’—a walkway of engraved bricks dedicated to loved ones.
While the wood is a private space for remembrance, the Trust is hosting its annual Summer Social on Saturday, 4th July 2026 (1:00 PM – 3:00 PM) at Perlethorpe Village Hall. This is a ticketed event specifically for the MSA community to connect, enjoy afternoon tea, and take a guided walk to the wood. Tickets must be booked in advance via the Trust’s website, as the event is not open to the general public.
The MSA Trust relies entirely on voluntary donations to support those living with the condition and to fund research. To support their work, dedicate a brick, or book tickets for the social.
